Chiropractic Care Improves Urinary Incontinence

A recently published case-series report indicates chiropractic care to be beneficial for certain individuals suffering from urinary incontinence. The report reviews 21 patients aged 13 to 90 years old with a history of urinary incontinence for the preceding 4 months to 49 years with associated muscle dysfunction and low back and/or pelvic pain. I

ncontinence was so bad in 18 of the 21 that they had been wearing incontinence pads during the previous days and nights upon presenting themselves for treatment. All patients were evaluated and treated chiropractically for impairments in the lumbar spine, pelvis and hip.

Treatments included chiropractic manipulative therapy, spinal decompression and/or myofascial trigger point release. The urinary incontinence symptoms resolved in 10 patients, considerably improved in 7 cases, and slightly improved in 4 cases. Periodic follow-up examinations for the past 6 years, and no less than 2 years, indicate the improvements for each patient remained stable.1

Chiropractors Take Headaches Personally

In two separate studies reported in Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, chiropractic care was shown to be effective in alleviating both migraine headaches and cervicogenic dizziness (dizziness created by a mechanical disturbance in the neck). While these are individual studies, they demonstrate the potential of chiropractic care for the successful management of migraine headaches and dizziness.

According to these specific studies, a 52 year old female with a 40 year history of migraine headaches occurring approximately monthly was migraine-free at her six month follow up evaluation after receiving chiropractic care. A 29 year old man with a 10 year history of progressive dizziness and neck pain reported a reduction of both pain and dizziness and an improved quality of life after chiropractic treatment.

My personal experience:  After a fall from a trampoline at age 7, I developed daily neck pain and migraine headaches. I suffered for over ten years. After a neck injury during high school sports, my parents took me to a chiropractor who resolved both of my problems; no more neck pain, no more headaches. What a game changer that was to my life. As a result, I have dedicated my professional life to ‘changing the game’ for my patients.

While not every migraine or dizziness sufferer obtains these results, I have successfully treated literally thousands of patients with these conditions. Our modern techniques combined with twenty five years of chiropractic experience offer help to thousands of satisfied patients.

Maximize Your Efforts for Maximum Heart Health

When it comes to getting the most out of your workouts, a recent article in Reuters confirms that the key is reaching and maintaining you target heart rate during your workout. To determine your target rate you must do a little brain exercise. First, determine your maximum heart rate (MHR) by subtracting your age from 220. So for a 40 year old person their MHR would be 180 beats per minute (220 – 40 = 180). Next, multiply your MHR by 50 to 70 percent. This is your target workout heart rate. So the 40 year old, it would be 90 to 126 beats per minute (180 X .50 = 90; 180 X .70 = 126).

How does one know when they have reached MHR? There are many low-cost exercise heart monitors available. A simple rule of thumb is that you should not be able to talk or sing during your workout. If you find yourself singing to Beastie Boys Greatest Hits, it’s time to step up the pace (and get a new CD!).

Scientists have observed that getting your heart beat up to 50 – 70 percent of one’s MHR is the key to a long and healthy life. Even though burning calories is helpful to melting the pounds away, it does not compare to the lasting benefits of strengthening your heart. Your heart is like any muscle in the body; the more you work it the stronger it becomes. The stronger your heart is the more efficient it pumps blood throughout your body which means your heart beats less and the less it beats the longer is lasts. The next time you are working out, don’t skip the cardio and remember to stay in the zone of your target heart rate.

Chiropractic Care for PMS and Menstrual Pain

Although the practice of chiropractic is one with neuromusculoskeletal focus, a number of benign conditions appear to respond to chiropractic treatment methods. As a result, some patients seek chiropractic care as a non-invasive, non-drug therapeutic intervention. Premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea are but two conditions that seem to respond favorably to chiropractic manipulative therapy.

In one study, PMS sufferers were given questionnaires to evaluate changes in ten categories of symptoms. These included irritability and mood swings, tension, ineffectiveness, lack of motor coordination, mental/cognitive functioning, eating habits, variations in sexual drive and activity, overall physical symptoms and social impairment.

After chiropractic treatment, the subjects reported improvement in all ten categories with the greatest improvement of symptoms relating to variations in sexual drive (79.7%), social impairment (64.5%), and mood swings (60.8%). The overall average improvement in all symptom categories was 44.2%.

Another study by medical neurologist Dr. Karl Lewit proved chiropractic spinal manipulation to give excellent results for dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). In a group of 70 women with menstrual pain and negative gynecological findings, 80% reported excellent or favorable results from chiropractic care.
