Sensory Processing Disorders Improve with Chiropractic Treatment

Sensory processing disorders (SPD) are impairments in detecting, modulating, interpreting, or responding to sensory stimuli. One study estimates that 5 percent of elementary aged children met the criteria for SPD. These conditions are closely related to other neurodevelopmental disorders and often overlap with autism and ADHD. Recent studies have shown the benefits of chiropractic in enhancing the functionality of individuals with SPD and Autism.

In 2011, we have more children and young adults affected by neurodevelopmental disorders than ever before. There are many factors involved in this such as birth and/or early childhood trauma, environmental toxins, food allergens, the avoidance of breast feeding and heavy vaccination. These are all areas that show promise as causative factors in the formation of neuro-developmental disorders.

Birth trauma can come in the form of a forceps or vacuum extraction delivery. Even normal vaginal or cesarean birth processes can be traumatic. The most vulnerable area of the infant’s body is the upper cervical spine. This also happens to be the area where the brain stem ties into the top of the spinal cord. Birth trauma can significantly damage this region and create a neurological insult that is referred to as subluxation. Dr. Hall has provided conservative, effective care for children with issues like these for 30 years.

Chiropractic Care More Helpful Than NSAIDs

Almost every American will suffer with low back pain sometime during their life. A study recently published in the journal Spine estimates the prevalence at 80%. Continued research also shows that chiropractic care is superior for treatment of back pain.

A German study of over 100 low back pain patients compared NSAIDs (drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin and Aleve) to spinal manipulation (the most common type of chiropractic care) and placebo treatment. The study showed a marked improvement of the chiropractic patients over the other two groups.

Other studies have also found chiropractic care to be more cost effective than comparable medical treatment. Medical costs for back pain in the US now exceed $50 BILLION a year. Incidentally, according to the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine: “It has been estimated conservatively that 170,000 NSAID-related deaths occur among patients with rheumatoid or osteoarthritis every year in the United States”.

Chiropractic Help for Sciatic Leg Pain

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain radiating down the leg. Sciatica is often due to compression and irritation of a spinal nerve root. How can a bad back cause pain down a leg? Liken it to a car hitting a utility pole and making the lights in your house go out.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It originates in the lower spine and runs down into the buttocks, legs, feet and toes. Mechanical ‘malfunctions’ of the spine can occur as a result of an injury or because of daily imbalances. Such malfunctions commonly affect the sciatic nerve which may lead to nerve irritation and pain. When the pain radiates down the leg is called sciatica. This type of nerve impingement can be associated with pain as well as weakness, tingling, numbness even lack of coordination.
