Low Back Pain Guidelines Include Chiropractic Spinal Adjustment

The American Pain Society and The American College of Physicians have recently updated their guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of low back pain. The new guidelines strongly recommend spinal manipulation for the treatment of acute, subacute and chronic low back. (This incidentally is the most common form of chiropractic treatment) The researchers stated, “Clinicians should consider the addition of nonpharmacological [nondrug] therapy with proven benefits for acute low back pain.

Spinal manipulation (aka chiropractic adjustment) is a hands-on, drugless therapy with proven results. Almost 95% of all spinal manipulation in the United States is conducted by chiropractic physicians. Research shows chiropractic to be less costly and more effective for treating low back pain than traditional medical care.

Spinal Injection – an Unsupported Treatment for Back Pain Management

Common medical treatment for low back pain is spinal canal injections. The prestigious international medical journal Spine points out the lack of research evidence to support the practice.

A review of eighteen separate spinal injection trials showed, “no strong evidence for or against the use of any type of injection therapy.” The study concludes, “There is insufficient evidence to support the use of injection therapy in sub-acute and chronic low back pain.”

Jaw Pain. Thinking Outside the Box

TMJ Disorder is a dysfunction of the jaw joint(s). The disorder often causes pain, clicking or grating sounds, headache or limited jaw motion. If you have these symptoms, you may have already consulted your dentist or orthodontist. That’s a great place to start to rule out any pathology.

beautiful-healthy-smile-300wDr. Hall has found that unless there has been some sort of mouth trauma, TMJ Disorder is typically NOT a jaw problem at all. In fact, jaw balance and function is directly related to the balance and function of the cervical spine. More often than a jaw trauma the patient has a history of some sort of neck trauma, often a car wreck or sports injury. Surprisingly, TMJ Disorder can often be linked to poor posture such as hunching over a computer.

Dr. Hall’s through exam will assess the systems involved in proper neck and jaw mechanics. He will then fashion a treatment plan aimed at improving the coordinated movements of the spine and neck that can lead to this often debilitating problem. Treatment often involves in-office treatment as well as ‘homework’ aimed at lasting improvement. . In most cases, the doctor’s first goal is to relieve symptoms, particularly pain. If Dr. Hall feels that you need special appliances or splints, he will refer you to a dentist or orthodontist for co-management.
