The Unbreakable Wolfe’s Law

2498102489_619d2b53af_zWolff’s Law shows that weight bearing exercise leads to increased bone density. Interestingly, X-rays of a professional baseball pitcher will show a much larger, denser, stronger bone in their pitching arm. A recent study supports adolescent sports and physical activity in general to improve bone health and lessen the likelihood of bone fracture later in life.

Specifically, jumping and running help increase the long-term bone density of the hips and pelvis where many osteoporotic fractures occur. Bone fractures in the elderly all too often result in a cascade of failing health and death.

Fortunately, the long term effects of activity early in life will likely reduce the likelihood of bone fracture by as much as 50 percent later in life.

Women, Get Up and Go to Prevent Stroke

Sedentary women are more likely to suffer a life changing stroke than their more healthy friends. Research published in Archives of Internal Medicine showed that women who practiced healthy habits such as regular exercise, abstinence from smoking, moderate to no alcohol consumption, nutritious diet and a healthy body weight are 70% less likely to suffer an ischemic stroke.

So, if you’re wondering if a healthy lifestyle change is a good idea, the answer is, “You bet your life it is!”
