Exercise Helps Prevent Stroke and Dementia

The latest issue of Neurology reports new research indicating moderate to intense exercise may be effective at reducing strokes and dementia. Comparisons were made of brain MRIs of those who exercise more vigorously versus those who did little or no exercise.  The more vigorous exercisers showed significantly less brain impairment caused by blocked arteries when compared to the more sedentary group. Remarkably, there was no difference between the light exercisers and the abstinent exercisers.

While the study did not directly evaluate exercise intensity to the rates of stroke and dementia, the findings of increased brain blood flow and less brain damage strongly suggests that moderate to intense exercise should considerably lower the incidence of stroke and dementia. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly.
